Tips on How to Haggle

For many of us haggling does not come naturally. However, should you haggle to could save a lot of money.

Here are some tips as to how you can become an effective negotiator and clinch that crucial deal.

  • Undertake your research. Prior to visiting a dealer, find out the discounts other companies offer. You will find a great deal of information regarding prices charged by car supermarkets, brokers and Internet car companies.
  • Should you be buying privately, look at the prices that similar cars are selling for and set the price you are willing to pay. Proceed to negotiate to the price you are willing to pay with the seller.
  • Remain calm. You are more likely to clinch a better deal should you be cool and collected.
  • Work out what specification of car you are looking for to purchase. Do not get fooled into buying a lower spec car, unless of course the lower price appeals to you.
  • Begin by offering a low, yet realistic opening price. Allow the other party to negotiate the price up to where you are both content with.
  • Do not get side tracked by special showroom offers. Ensure they are as good as they say they are. It may be better to opt for a bigger discount rather than plump for a special offer.
  • Show your commitment. Should you look like you want the deal, the other party is more likely to try harder to strike a mutually agreeable deal.
  • When you need to, give an ultimatum. Should you be close to a deal, state that you are willing to buy a specific car at a set price and see if they agree.
  • If you do not get the deal you are looking for, do not be afraid of walking away. There are plenty of other deals out there.
