Cars registered before 1 March 2001
Road tax for cars registered before March 1st 2001 is still based on the engine size of the vehicle. This is mainly because the emissions test data is not available for many cars registered before March 2001, so the rate of tax cannot be linked to CO2 emissions. Engine size is also used to calculate road tax for motorcycles and tricycles.
