The Volkswagen Golf was the best selling car in Europe during November as sales in the continental market dropped 1.1 per cent to 1.25 million.
Figures from the association of European carmakers, Acea, show total sales were up 1.1 per cent to 14.8 million in the year to 30 November.
Acea said consumer uncertainty in November had led to waning private demand in Western Europe (a 2.1 per cent fall) while sales in new EU member states surged ahead rising by 12.4 per cent.
Spanish and German markets suffered downturns last month, but Italy, the UK and France all recorded a year-on-year rise.
Meanwhile the VW Golf took top spot for November sales, followed by the Peugeot 207 and Ford Focus .
Opel/Vauxhalls Corsa and Astra models made up the list of top five best selling cars for November 2007.
Volkswagen remained Europe's top selling carmaker in November despite an 8.4 per cent downturn, followed by Ford and Opel/Vauxhall .
In contrast, Renault enjoyed a long awaited boom in business with an increase of 5.6 per cent in car sales following the launch of the new Laguna.
