Japanese Car Quality Shines In New Consumer Poll

Tue, 03 Jul 2007

A new survey from consumer group Which? has revealed that Japanese cars are the most reliable, the least polluting and the best to own.

Honda came out top in this year's Reliability Award, based on a Which? readers' survey of 100,000 cars, with second place going to Toyota - winners of the Best Manufacturer Award .

Toyota also picked up The Green Award ahead of BMW, which won the Road Testers' Award .

Chevrolet, Chrysler and Dodge, notably all US manufacturers, had some models criticised due to safety concerns.

Which? added that safety-conscious car buyers should stay clear of the Chrysler Voyager, a people carrier, the Dodge Caliber, a medium-sized car, and the Chevrolet Matiz, a rebadged small Daewoo .

Volvo's safety image was let down by concerns about seatbelts, which enabled the Ford Galaxy and the brand new Toyota Auris to share the Safety Award .

The Ownership Award was won by Lexus ahead of Honda, although the Honda Jazz was this year's most reliable individual model .

Five other Japanese marques made it into the Reliability Award list - Daihatsu, Lexus, Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki and Mitsubishi - while the only serious non-Japanese contender listed for the Award was Korea's Hyundai, which came joint third.

Nissan, another Japanese manufacturer and Ford also scored highly in the reliability stakes, but Renault, Nissan's sister marque and Land Rover came bottom of the reliability league table.
