Car buyers could get their hands on a Renault battery-powered electric car in three to four years time, according to the company president and CEO Carlos Ghosn.
The CEO, who has admitted to driving a zero-emission fuel cell car when in his home city of Tokyo, said that the French car manufacturer is currently testing pricing for the eco-friendly model with large fleet operators.
Ghosn stated that Renault is already one of the most efficient car makers when it comes to carbon dioxide, although it could start to fall short on emissions targets as it pushes forward with its commitment to launch 24 new cars worldwide between now and 2009.
The new cars list includes a new executive model that will replace the unsuccessful Vel Satis and a new 4x4 based on the Nissan X-Trail.
Ghosn said: "Classical technologies will play a big part in reducing carbon dioxide, but when it comes to urban driving, nothing will be solved until you come to zero emissions."
Heavy criticism has been aimed at Renault in recent months over the companys lack of styling flair in its latest Twingo and Laguna models, but Ghosn responded by stating the company can still deliver original cars, adding that next years launch of the new Megane will prove its critics wrong.
