The managing director of Swedish carmaker Saab has criticised the UK Government for failing to create enough incentives for drivers to switch to the biofuel E85 .
The eco friendly E85 bioethanol emits up to 60 per cent less harmful green house gases, while giving up to 25 per cent (estimated) better mileage than standard petrol .
The UK currently provides just 16 fuel pumps that offer E85, with a further 21 scheduled to open by the end of the year, although the combined figure of 37 would still be some way behind the 127 pumps in France and the impressive 900 E85 pumps in Sweden .
The Governments of both these countries offer strong financial incentives for motorists to use the fuel and now Saab's head Jan-Ake Jonsson has urged the UK Government to follow suit and do more to promote the usage of E85 .
"The strong UK fleet market can make a tremendous difference, starting with the government's own fleet of vehicles," he said.
"It is strange why London's mayor has still not granted E85 an exemption from congestion charges," Jonsson added.
Both Saab and Ford sell cars capable of running on E85 in Britain, with Peugeot expected to follow suit by next year.
