Volvo is set to introduce a new breathalyser system into some of its models - aimed at stopping drink-drivers being able to start their car .
The alcolock will go on sale at the tail end of 2008 and will able to be installed in Volvo S80, V70 and XC70 models .
The new safety feature works by analysing a sample of the driver's breath, which must be blown into a wireless hand-held unit before the engine will start.
The drivers results are transmitted by a radio signal to the car's electronic control system where advanced sensors enable it to detect if the driver is trying to cheat for example, by using an air pump .
The carmaker, known for its in-car safety features, stresses that the system is only intended to help drivers make safe decisions and not for control against drink-driving .
Volvo revealed that the system can be bypassed in case of emergencies, either once or an unlimited number of times, depending which setting is installed by a Volvo dealer .
