Vauxhall has launched an eco-friendly version of the companys long-standing Astra Ecoflex.
Named the Astra Ecoflex, the car is powered by a 108bhp 1.7-diesel engine and is capable of giving 62.8mpg while emitting 119g/km of carbon dioxide.
Engineers have increased the cars fuel efficiency and reduced emissions by tweaking the standard cars suspension, aerodynamics and engine management system .
The green car has also been fitted with low-rolling resistance tyres and its weight slashed by 30kg.
The Astra Ecoflex will cost private buyers just £35 a year in Vehicle Excise Duty, while it also falls into the lowest Benefit In Kind tax band for company car drivers.
Prices for a five-door Astra Ecoflex start at £16,340 in Life A/C trim, which is roughly a £300 premium on the standard Astra, and around £300 less than the equivalent Ford Focus Econetic model. Pricing on three-door and estate models will be announced later this year.
Ecoflex variants of Vauxhall Insignia and Corsa models will go on sale in the UK from 2009.
