The first compact SUV from Volkswagen has arrived in the UK .
The brand new Tiguan - little brother to the Touareg 4x4 - is expected to help VW achieve 95 per cent market coverage within the next two years.
The German carmaker claims the compact SUV sector accounts for 108,000 vehicle sales each year.
The Tiguan looks similar and drives in a comparable way to its big brother, the Touareg 4x4 .
The compact SUV, which boasts a similar design to the Touareg, will enter the sector looking to compete with the Toyota RAV 4, Honda CRV and Land Rover Freelander - which lead the way in the battle of compact off-roaders'.
VW said the Tiguan will be available with two engine types - a 2.0-litre TDI 140PS diesel engine and a 1.4-litre TSI 150PS petrol engine .
From July onwards, the line-up will be supplemented by 170PS diesel and petrol versions as well as a 200PS 2-litre petrol engine . The car manufacturer claims all engines meet the Euro 5 emissions standards that come into force next year.
Volkswagen has estimated sales of the mini SUV at 10,500 this year, rising to 11,300 in 2009, while it also expects over 85 per cent of buyers to choose a diesel engine and 60 per cent of sales going to private customers.
