Mercedes are set to follow in Audis footsteps by turning to high-performance diesel engines, according to motoring magazine Auto Express.
The German carmaker is reportedly close to launching an AMG-badged diesel model, following the unveiling of Audis R8 V12 TDI concept at the Detroit Motor Show .
Mercedes is looking to use powerful V8 diesel engines to create models that can produce over 700Nm of torque and greater long-distance cruising efficiency than petrol alternatives.
Company bosses remain tight-lipped about the diesel plans for AMG - Mercedes performance division - but did confirm that a further five models will be facelifted in 2008 in addition to the revised SLK, which was unveiled at the American motor show .
The Mercedes SL is expected to be the next in line for an extensive makeover, followed by the M-Class premium SUV and the classy CLS coupe .
The prestige carmaker is also set to make more significant changes to its A and B-Class range, which will include styling alterations and the addition of an ultra-efficient four-cylinder diesel engine with start/stop technology .
