Production of the worlds first electric-powered supercar is underway in the UK, although it is highly unlikely British car buyers will be able to get their hands on the first-of-its-kind model.
Despite being developed by Lotus and partially built in East Anglia, the Tesla Roadster will not be available in the UK, or in any other European markets, according to the cars US-based owner Tesla Motors .
The company announced the eco-friendly supercar, which runs entirely on electricity, will only be available to drivers in the US .
However, with the 2008 models already sold out, the majority of Americans will have to wait until next year to place their orders for the $98,000 (£48,000) supercar.
In terms of performance, the Tesla Roadster is capable of reaching 60mph in just 3.9 seconds while also boasting impressive lasting power, with the car capable of driving 221 miles from a single charge equal to a journey between London and Liverpool .
Tesla Motors also announced plans to introduce a five-seater electric sports saloon by 2010.
