The Volkswagen Polo has been crowned European Car of the Year for the first time by motoring journalists across the continent.
The fifth version of the popular German supermini scooped the 2010 award after receiving a total of 347 points from the panel of 59 judges, ten more than Toyota's innovative iQ city car, which came second in the annual award.
Vauxhall's Astra hatchback came third, scoring 221 points, while fourth and fifth place went to the Skoda Yeti and the Mercedes-Benz E-class respectively.
All 59 journalists from 23 European countries gave points to the Polo, with 25 choosing it as their favourite car .
"The Polo convinced most of all thanks to its complete safety package and its range of modern engines," said jury president Hakan Matson.
Many judges referred to the fact the new Polo offered Golf-like space and ability but at Polo prices.
The accolade marks the first time a Volkswagen model has won the prestigious award since the Golf triumphed in 1992, despite the brand being shortlisted 11 times for its cars .
The VW Polo replaces the Vauxhall Insignia which won the 2009 award. Other recent winners include the Fiat 500 (2008), Ford S-Max (2007), Renault Clio (2006) and the Toyota Prius (2005).
