Boost In Supermini Sales But Industry Slump Continues

Thu, 12 Mar 2009

Sales of superminis in the UK continue to rise despite an overall slump car sales, latest industry figures have revealed.

The number of supermini purchases made over the last twelve months increased by a massive 47.3 per cent on the previous 12-month period, with the new Ford Fiesta the most popular model.

However, the figures also revealed that car manufacturers are still struggling to attract buyers, with overall car sales in the UK down nearly 22 per cent year-on-year.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have warned that urgent government support is still needed to improve the current situation in the motor industry.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "Other European countries have been proactive in assisting their automotive industries . It is imperative that UK Government increases the pace in responding to industry proposals for a scrappage scheme, and access to finance and credit ."
