Ford has revealed that its new Focus Econetic model will be the first to feature fuel-saving stop-start technology when it goes on sale next year.
The Auto-Start-Stop system works by switching off the engine when the vehicle is stationary, at traffic lights for example, and restarts it again in less than half a second when the driver wants to move off, saving fuel from being wasted.
The green cars 1.6-litre TDCi engine emits just 99g/km of CO2 emissions and gives drivers 74.2 miles per gallon of fuel .
Other eco-friendly technologies include regenerative charging, where braking energy is harnessed to recharge the battery, and an on-board system that helps educate the driver to drive more efficiently.
Known as Eco Mode, the system monitors driving habits, such as when the driver changes gear, how smoothly they drive, the efficiency of their speed on the motorway etc, and offers advice on they can improve fuel economy over time.
Ford has also confirmed that five-door and estate versions of the Focus Econetic will be available without the Auto-Stop-Start system, although emissions from both cars will rise to 104g/km and fuel economy will fall to 70.6mpg.
