Peugeot has released details of its new electric city car, the Peugeot iOn.
The eco-friendly motor has been developed as part of a new agreement between Mitsubishi Motors and PSA Peugeot-Citroen, which was signed last week in Paris and is the first step of a partnership to produce electric vehicles .
Based on the Mitsubishi i MiEV , the four-door iOn comes uses lithium-ion batteries to produce a maximum power output of 64bhp, a top speed of 80mph and a maximum driving range of 80 miles.
According to Peugeot, the batteries take six hours to fully recharge using a conventional domestic socket, although a fast-charging system will be introduced that allows owners to charge them to 80 per cent capacity within 30 minutes.
A useful feature of the iOn is the 'localised communication unit', which is designed to minimise range anxiety by displaying battery status, distance covered and distance to the next required maintenance.
Peugeot hope the unit will also increase the green cars appeal to fleet buyers.
Production of the iOn will start in October 2010, with the electric car scheduled to go on sale across Europe by the end of 2010, followed by a similar model under the Citroen brand. Prices and specification have yet to be announced.
