Toyota has begun work on repairing nearly 200,000 UK models that have been recalled due to problems involving the accelerator pedal and the brakes .
The first 6,000 vehicles with sticky accelerator problems were fixed at 206 service centres across the UK yesterday - leaving another 180,200 cars to fix.
Toyota, the world's largest car maker, said staff at the service centres will work longer hours to try and clear the huge backlog of cars by mid-March. Each repair is estimated to take around 30 minutes to complete.
Each service centre has also received the software update needed to resolve a glitch with the braking system on its latest Prius model, which was also the subject of a recall.
Toyota said all 8,500 Prius owners and keepers in the UK affected by the problem would be informed of the software upgrade within days.
Over 400,000 Prius and other Toyota hybrid models been recalled from across the globe this week due to faulty brakes .
The recalls are the latest in a line of embarrassing Toyota product problems that have affected more than 8.5 million vehicles globally.
Meanwhile Honda, Japans second biggest car manufacturer, announced yesterday it was recalling a further 437,700 cars around the world to tackle an airbag problem.
The company has now recalled close to 950,000 vehicles for airbag faults, which have been linked to one fatality and a total of 11 injuries in the US.
