The number of cars sold through the vehicle scrappage scheme has nearly reached 300,000 units, according to the latest figures from the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders).

The data shows that between May and December 2009, a total of 284,479 cars were registered under the scheme, along with 4494 light commercial vehicles, taking the overall figure to 288,973.

In December alone, the scrappage scheme accounted for a fifth (20.9 per cent) of all new car registrations .

According to the SMMT, Ford has registered the most vehicles under the scheme with 34,037, followed by Hyundai and Toyota .

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said the government-backed scheme, which is due to come to an end at the end of next month, has given a major boost to Britain’s motoring industry.

He commented: "The Scrappage incentive scheme has helped significantly to increase new car registrations in each of the last six months, including a 38.9 per cent increase in the December 2009 market."

"This has provided an important boost to the UK motor industry and greater confidence for consumers.

"Alongside the economic benefits, the scheme has helped to promote the take-up of cleaner, safer and more fuel efficient vehicles ."

Mr Everitt confirmed that the scheme is due to end at the end of February, with more than three quarters of the £400m budget already used up.
