Thu, 15 Jul 2010

The new Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI 105 Bluemotion has been named the UK’s number one green car at the What Car? Green Awards.

The 5-door model, which has an average MPG of 74.3 and emits just 99g of CO2 per km, beat eight other category winners to the title of Green Car of the Year 2010 , and also claimed the award for best Green Small Family Car .

Commenting on the top award, Professor Dr Stefan Gies, head of chassis development at Volkswagen, said: "Ever since the first Bluemotion model was launched in 2007 our strategy for this environmental sub-brand has been to produce class-leading vehicles which are efficient, sustainable, practical, comfortable and competitively priced."

"This is what our customers want and all these values are encapsulated in the Golf ."

What Car? editor-in-chief Steve Fowler commented: "Volkswagen has built a hugely desirable car that's big on ability, but small on running costs."

"The Golf Bluemotion does an enviable 74.3mpg and emits just 99g/km of CO2, which means it is exempt from road tax, while company car tax will be based on just 13 per cent of its £18,685 list price. It's a package that's hard to beat. VW dealers are going to be busy."

Other winners of the What Car? Green Awards included the Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi 90 Style 5dr, which became the first car to pick up the new Used Green Car award, the Fiat 500 1.2 pop (best Green Supermini), the VW Passat 1.6 TDI 105 Bluemotion (best Green Family Car) and the Jaguar XJ 3.0D (best Luxury Green Car).

The 2010 What Car? Green Awards were held in association with Warranty Direct.
