The new all-electric i-MiEV supermini from Mitsubishi will go on sale at the start of 2011 with a price tag of £38,699, the carmaker has announced.
Buyers will be able to knock £5000 off the sale price through an electric car grant from the government, but even so the cost of the i-MiEV will remain considerably higher than the price of conventional superminis.
The car will, however, be exempt from road tax and the £8-a-day charge for driving through Londons congestion zone, allowing owners to save up to £2000 over a year.
According to Mitsubishi, servicing costs will be low because the car has fewer moving parts than fuel-powered cars, meaning more savings for owners.
In addition to being eco-friendly, the i-MiEV is also very practical with enough space for four adults with luggage, and an estimated driving range of 80 miles.
A full recharge of the battery through a household plug socket takes six hours, but a rapid charge gets it back to 80 per cent capacity in just 30 minutes.
Other features of the i-MiEV include stability control, front-, side- and curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, keyless central locking, electric windows and air-conditioning.
