Nissan Reveals UK Price For All-Electric Leaf

Thu, 20 May 2010

Nissan has announced that its new all-electric car, the Nissan Leaf, will cost UK buyers £23,350 when it goes on sale next year.

The price includes a government grant of £5,000, meaning the actual launch price will be £28,350 – nearly £10,000 more than the Leaf's direct rival, the Prius electric-petrol hybrid .

However, the AA claim that buyers will be able to make their money back in just three years due to the car’s low running costs. The car is also exempt from road tax and London's congestion charge.

Edmund King, president of the AA, said: "At first sight it looks expensive but we estimate a Ford Focus or similar car in that category would cost about 14p a mile, where the Leaf would cost something like 0.3p per mile depending on your electricity tariff ."

"If you do 10,000 miles you save around £1,500 a year. Over three years you almost make your money back on the premium."

The Leaf, which stands for Leading, Environmentally Friendly, Affordable, Family car, has been billed by Nissan as the world's first mass-produced electric vehicle with zero emissions.

The five-door hatchback has a top speed of 90mph, a range of 100 miles and can be rapid-charged to 80 percent of its lithium battery capacity in just 30 minutes.

The eco-friendly car will be launched in the UK in February 2011, with reservations start be made from July.
