Hyundai Sales Reach All-Time High

Korean carmaker Hyundai has delivered its best ever annual sales figures for the UK, defying industry forecasts.

The company has announced that some 57,391 cars have been sold in Britain so far this year, eclipsing last year’s sales total of 56,927 which were aided by the government’s car scrappage scheme .

The car manufacturer estimates that total vehicle sales in the UK market will reach 62,000 by the end of the year, which would represent a year-on-year increase of nearly 9 per cent.

Sales have been driven by the popularity of Hyundai’s i10 city car, which continues to be its best selling model. A total of 22,208 i10 cars have been sold this year, followed by 14,302 Hyundai i30 models and 12,113 i20 cars .

Tony Whitehorn, Hyundai's managing director, said: "Whilst 2009 was a great year for Hyundai in the UK, 2010 is even better. Scrappage gave the franchise a boost and catapulted it into people's awareness. 2010 proves that we are here to stay."

"Considering that last year Hyundai enjoyed nine months of scrappage and this year only three months, this is an outstanding result."

He added: "Scrappage introduced our cars to a number of customers who previously had not considered them, and they were surprised by the style, quality and equipment levels. The customers have been our best advocates."

" Hyundai dealers are earning more than 2 per cent return on sales - which is amongst the best in the industry - and we have people queuing up wanting the franchise."
