Skoda Scoops Best Carmaker Award

Skoda has been named the UK’s number one car manufacturer by readers of What Car? Magazine.

The company received the most votes in the carmaker category of the 2010 What Car? Readers Awards, beating off competition from Porsche and Daihatsu .

The BMW 1 Series Coupe scooped the best overall car award, receiving a five-star reader rating. The car also came first in the best coupe category.

Second place in the best car category went to the Land Rover Defender, which was also named best crossover and 4x4, while the Alfa Romeo MiTo – winner of the best supermini award - came third overall. Readers voted the Ford Focus CC the worst car of 2010.

Steve Fowler, editor in chief of What Car? said: "The results suggest that no one ever regrets buying a 1 Series Coupe, with the vast majority of readers dishing out a full five-star verdict.

"The entry-level BMW was complimented for its driving ability as well as its fuel consumption. It's a worthy winner."

Other What Car? award winners included the Mercedes-Benz CLS (best executive and luxury car ); Mini Clubman (best estate); Skoda Octavia (best small family); Ford C-Max (best MPV); Lotus Elise (best open top) and the Volkswagen Passat CC (best family/compact car).
