Lexus Recalling Thousands Of UK Motors Over Safety Concerns

Fri, 22 Oct 2010

Lexus has announced it is recalling more than 15,000 UK cars due to potential faults with the brakes and fuel systems.

The carmaker wants to check the brakes of 15,400 IS, GS and RX models built between February 2003 and November 2005 as it has discovered that a loose seal in the brake master cylinder could allow fluid to leak into the brake booster.

According to Lexus, owners of the affected cars will be alerted to the problem by the brake fluid warning light, and the brakes will still function as normal for a further 200 miles.

A further 2,081 GS300 cars produced between September 2004 and February 2006 are also being recalled by the Japanese company over problems with the fuel pump's wiring harness.

Expansion and contraction of the fuel tank can stress the wiring harness and lead to a break in the circuit, which would cause the engine to shut down without warning.

Lexus said it is working with government agency VOSA to get in contact with registered owners to inform them of the problems and make arrangements for repair work, which will be carried out free of charge.

Belinda Poole, director of Lexus UK, said: "We apologise for any inconvenience or concern these recalls may cause our customers."

"Our Lexus centres will be liaising with our customers to carry out the recall repair procedures as promptly as possible, with all work undertaken by expertly trained Lexus service personnel.''

The company added that no accidents have been reported as a result of the potential faults.
