Mercedes To Recall Over 22,000 UK Cars Over Steering Concerns

Thu, 14 Oct 2010

Mercedes-Benz has announced it is recalling more than 22,000 of its C and E-Class models in the UK due to a power steering fault.

The German carmaker said it has discovered that a nut within the power steering pump may not have been tightened correctly, causing fluid to leak from the power assisted steering system and reducing the steering assistance.

Mercedes Benz UK spokesman Rob Halloway said the company was taking a "precautionary" move in recalling all 22,355 C-Class saloon and estate models, and E-Class saloon, estate, coupe and convertible cars built between June 2009 and February 2010.

Owners of the affected cars will be contacted later this week and informed of the potential problem, but Mercedes stressed that any owners who are already experiencing problems with their power steering should contact their local dealer immediately.

It added that the repair work - which involves tightening a nut within the steering pump - would take no longer than 30 minutes and will carried out free of charge.

Spokesman Rob Halloway said: "We are checking every single car and writing to all affected owners inviting them to bring their vehicles in to their local dealer."

"This is purely a precautionary matter and we are not aware of any incidents or accidents as a result of the problem."

In total, 85,000 Mercedes cars are being recalled worldwide.
