Volkswagen has added to its popular Golf range with the launch of a new entry-level model, the Golf Twist.

The car, which is available in three or five-door versions, is powered by a 78bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine which is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox .

It has a 0-62mph time of 13.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 107mph. Average economy is 44.1mpg, and CO2 emissions are 149g/km.

Volkswagen have based the Twist on the Golf S, but have given the car an additional £700 worth of standard equipment including 16-inch alloy wheels and an RCD 310 stereo with MDI multimedia connectivity. Standard safety kit includes stability control and seven airbags.

The new Golf is available to order now, with prices starting at £12,995 for the three-door car and £13,580 for the five-door model – making it £1885 cheaper than the previous entry-level model, the Golf S .

Meanwhile, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have revealed that the 60 registration plate helped boost UK car sales last month.

According to the SMMT’s latest figures, a total of 335,246 new cars were registered last month – 16.3 per cent up on the same period in 2009, excluding last year’s scrappage scheme sales.
