Used Cars Generating Most Consumer Complaints

Thu, 16 Sep 2010

The number of complaints made by used car buyers has soared to record levels, according to new figures.

Consumer Direct, the government-funded consumer advice service, received over 38,000 complaints regarding second hand cars during the first six months of 2010, an increase of 18 per cent from the same period last year.

The figure means used cars were again the cause of the most consumer complaints, just as in 2009s.

Last year, an investigation into Britain’s second hand car industry by the Office of Fair Trading found that almost 20 per cent of used car owners experienced a problem with their motor after purchasing it.

The OFT also discovered that around 30 per cent of owners ended up spending an average of £465 on fixing the problem themselves.

In response to the findings, the watchdog issued new guidelines for car dealers to ensure they known their responsibilities when selling used cars .

The guidelines include being open and honest about a vehicle's history, making sure that cars are of a satisfactory quality and ensuring staff do not use underhand tactics to persuade customers to buy. .
