Demand for 4x4 vehicles has soared over the past year thanks largely to improvements in fuel economy and CO2 emissions.
A study by study conducted by car search website Motoring.co.uk revealed the popularity of 4x4 vehicles among UK car buyers is at an all-time high, with the number of motorists looking to buy one increasing by over a third (35 per cent) in the last twelve months.
Chris Green, co-founder of Motoring.co.uk, said greener and more fuel efficient 4x4s, such as the upcoming Range Rover Evoque, are proving to be a big attraction for UK buyers.
"As major manufacturers continue to invest in more fuel efficient, smaller engine 4x4s, we will we continue to see demand continue to grow as motorists favour their size, safety and road handling in bad weather conditions," he added.
While demand for 4x4s has increased, fewer buyers seem to be interested in smaller cars, with the research showing that online searches for new superminis and hatchbacks have fallen by 30 per cent and 12 per cent respectively over the last year.
