Renault To Cut Laguna, Wind and Espace From UK Range

Wed, 21 Dec 2011

Renault has announced it is pulling three of its well-known models from the UK market.

From February 1,2012 the French carmaker will stop selling the Laguna, the Wind convertible, and the Espace and Grand Espace MPVs through its UK dealerships, while car version of the Kangoo and the Modus and Grand Modus are also due to be axed early next year.

A spokesman for the company said the move was purely profit-driven, as it felt the UK offering was too extensive and it wants to allow its dealers to concentrate on core models.

Sales of several of the outgoing models have been low compared with those of their rivals, with figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders showing that only 3204 Laguna’s were sold in 2010 compared to 30,115 Ford Mondeo’s.

According to the data, the Renault Wind has sold just 2354 units since its launch in mid-2010, and sales of the long-running Espace have also been struggling, with only 499 models sold in both formats in 2010 against the Ford Galaxy’s total of 7533.

Renault said it will revamp its entire UK range in 2012, with a face-lifted Twingo arriving in dealerships next month, followed by the new Scenic in February and the revamped Megane in April. The much-loved Clio is also due to get a fresh look in November.

2012 will also see the launch of several new Renault electric cars, including the Twizy in March, the Fluence in May and the Zoe supermini in October.
