Prestige car manufacturer Rolls-Royce has revealed that sales of its luxury motors reached an all-time high in 2011.
The BMW-owned company sold a total of 3,538 cars sold worldwide over the 12 months, exceeding its previous year figure by 30 per cent and smashing its previous global sales record of 3,347 cars, set in 1978.
Torsten Muller-Otvos, chief executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: "We had an outstanding year in 2011 and we should take a moment to reflect on this great British success story."
The record annual performance was largely driven by the luxury marque’s £165,000 Ghost model, which is smaller and less ostentatious than the £235,000 Phantom models, as well as growing sales in a number of key markets.
Sales in the Asia Pacific region rose 47 per cent. In the UK they were up 30 per cent, while in the Middle East they rose 23 per cent. China remains Rolls-Royce's biggest market, closely followed by the US and the UK.
Looking ahead, the carmaker said it plans to further develop its global network of dealerships, and enter new markets in South America.
